Irish Insurance Claims Contact Numbers

The claims registration lines for the main property insurers operating in Ireland. Numbers change from time to time, so check the insurer’s own website if a line does not connect.

One thing worth knowing before you dial: the number you need may depend on how the policy was sold. Policies bought through a bank, a broker or an affinity scheme are often serviced on a different line to those bought direct from the insurer. If you are unsure, the number on your policy schedule takes precedence over any list, including this one.

What happens on that first call

What you will be asked for

Your policy number, the date the damage occurred, what caused it, and a description of what has been damaged. You do not need estimates or costings to register a claim, and you are not obliged to put a figure on the loss during that first call. A number offered off the top of your head early on has a way of anchoring the claim for the rest of its life.

Register promptly

Policies contain notification conditions, and late notification gives an insurer grounds it would not otherwise have. Report the damage within a few days even where its full extent is not yet clear. Registering does not commit you to a figure and does not oblige you to proceed.

Photograph everything before you clean up

Wide shots showing the whole affected area, then close shots of each damaged element, then damaged contents where they lie. Do it before any clean-up. It is the single most useful thing a policyholder can do, and it cannot be done afterwards.

Emergency repairs yes, permanent repairs no

Your policy requires you to prevent further damage, so covering an open roof or lifting soaked flooring is expected and normally recoverable — keep the receipts. Permanent reinstatement is different: once the damage is repaired, the evidence supporting the claim is gone.

Keep damaged items

Do not dispose of damaged contents until you are told in writing that you may. Move them aside if they are a hazard, but photograph them first. Items cleared out during the first tidy-up are routinely impossible to substantiate later.

Who the loss adjuster works for

On most claims of any size the insurer appoints a loss adjuster to inspect the damage and recommend a settlement. The adjuster is an independent firm and will generally deal with you courteously, but they are instructed and paid by the insurer, and their recommendation is made to the insurer. A loss assessor is the equivalent professional appointed by the policyholder.

You may appoint your own assessor at any stage

There is no obligation to, and many straightforward claims settle perfectly well without one. Where a claim is large, contested, or involves business interruption, subsidence or suspected under-insurance, it is worth taking advice. Insurers confirm on their own claims pages that policyholders are free to appoint a public loss assessor, and that the assessor’s fee is not covered by the policy.

Before you register the claim

The first consultation is free and there is no obligation. We will tell you honestly whether your claim needs an assessor.
